Dreaming of traveling the globe? Here’s your guide.

A little theory on travel.

What is vagabonding?

Vagabonding is not a lifestyle, nor is it a trend. It’s just an uncommon way of looking at life– a value adjustment from which action naturally flows. And, as much as anything vagabonding is about time– our only real commodity– and how we choose to use it.

Long term travel is often viewed as a dream. Traveling in general has become nothing more than another accessory. It’s just something that we put on our credit card and it adds to our debt with all of our other crap. The art of traveling is just another commodity that’s putting us all in debt. It really shouldn’t be like this. Why is traveling the world viewed as some dream? It’s as if only people that win the lottery or retire rich can afford to see the world. This is not the way that travel should be perceived…

When you need to move, call a taxi and then proceed to put all your worldly possessions, in, on top of, and around the sides of the taxi.
2. When you are a party of 5 or more, hail a taxi and then pile in! The more the merrier!

Concerning Trash:

1. Put all your trash in the field by your house. Two weeks or so later, as you take the trash out, bring a lighter and light the pile on fire. Casually walk away leaving a roaring flame.
2. Whenever you purchase anything, it will undoubtedly come wrapped in plastic, take the purchased item out of the plastic and throw the plastic on the ground, or out the bus window.

Concerning Busses:

1. When you call for a bus, the bus will come to a screeching halt about 10 yards from where you are standing. Thus causing you to run so that you aren’t left behind.
2. When you board the bus, you will immediately lose your balance and that’s when the bus will jerk into motion, causing you to topple onto the nearest person, chair, or pole.
3. When there is an open window seat, you will be forced to clamber over the person sitting in the aisle in order to have a seat.
4. When all bus seats are full and there is little room for standing, should any young child board the bus you will be obliged to share your lap.
5. When you wish to exit the bus, scream PARE and the bus will either immediately stop, causing you to exit the bus at the velocity of a cannon; or the bus will stop approximately a block from where you wish to exit the bus.

Concerning Nighttime Entertainment:
1. You will start playing your music at 7 pm and the music will continue until 5 am at a full tilt, window shattering loudness; or you will begin playing your music at 5 am and continue until 10 am when you finally go to bed.
2. When you go out, you will leave your house at approximately 11pm and you will not return until 5am.
3. When you go out, you will head to the center of the city where you will locate a park bench, park yourself there and talk with your friends until small hours of the morning.
4. Restaurants, Bars, and Clubs, will let you have an alcoholic drink no matter your age, and you will be allowed to smoke, but only inside.

Concering Driving:
1. When approaching an intersection: Honk
2. When approaching a corner: Honk
3. When approaching another car: Honk
4. When passing: Honk
5. When approaching a pedestrian: Honk
6. When approaching thin air: Honk
7. Just to make sure: Honk
8.When passing make sure to pass on the right, in the dirt shoulder at mach 10
9. If you are a bus, make sure to drive as erraticaly as possible.
10. When you enter a car, be sure to leave your seatbelt off as that is safest
11. When your car begins to smoke, pull over, and begin to pour water ontop of the engine, into the engine, and MAKE SURE that you can create a geiser of water. This will solve your problem.
12. When stopping, or driving in general, make sure to drive as close to the other car as possible.
13. When your car crashes into someone elses, make sure to scream obscenities at them before you jerk your car in the opposite direction and race them to see who can drive faster.
14. If you feel inclined to lie down in the middle of the road, don’t worry! Someone will inevitably honk before they run you over.

I often find my self pinching my arm to make sure I’m not in a dream. I’m defiantly not, and I’m living a lavish life at this point in time. You see, my parents are adventuring Europe for two weeks and I have everything they own at my finger tips. Their car, their house, and most importantly their money. Things have been crazy, lots of lost nights and even more painful mornings. But thats not the problem here. The problem, as you will soon discover, is that I am probably living the dream of millions of people throughout the world. Some rich ass American kid w/ a silver spoon in his mouth and his parents credit card in his wallet. Fun has defiantly been had in the last week and a half, but we have a problem. I am moving to Ecuador and Peru in just about a month for six months to do some Humanitarian work for ASCEND Alliance (www.ascendalliance.org), and I’ve come to the realization that life is going to change, hopefully for the better. I will come back a humbled individual with honor and pride on my shoulders. I will be helping some of the poorest people in the world, as I live my rich lavish life right now, it makes me wonder. I probably have more assests at my finger tips then any of these people will see in a life time, and it really makes you think. What if you weren’t born American? What would it be like?

All of this just comes as some food for thought for my fellow Ramblers. We live crazy lives, but I urge you (and most of you probably have) to sit back and look at the world from a different perspective. Realize how lucky YOU are and THEY aren’t. I hope we all have open minds and open hearts as we travel this beautiful earth, and I hope we slowly become humbled by our experiences. As I arrive in Ecuador I will begin to discuss this concept of rich kid vs. poor family in more depth, but now, chew on it, mull it over, let me know what you think.

In honor of his life and death (April 21, 1910), BootsnAll has posted Twain’s “How I Travel” in its entirety.

Besides the first paragraph, which is my favorite -

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

I also quite like this one -

Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living. The world owes you nothing. It was here first.

Art in Cairo
Throughout this trip I have been trying...

whereis:

Art in Cairo

Throughout this trip I have been trying to search-out the local art scene in each country - the galleries & exhibitions of Paris are high on the list of the (few) things I miss from back home. Cairo seemed likely to be a good candidate for a representative of contemporary Middle Eastern & Egyptian art, but searching for galleries here garnered few results.

Townhouse Gallery is one of the most well-known of Cairo’s galleries, and was hosting a small exhibition exploring masculinity—Making a Man Out of Him—by female artist Huda Lutfi. And upstairs, the relatively well-stocked library (photo) provided a pleasant space to while away a couple of hours; burying myself in books and journals I began to question all that I had left behind.

The Stammer exhibition at the Darb centre was rather disappointing. Some work felt “unfinished” as one friend put it; others just seemed incoherent or a blind imitation of works I had seen several years ago in Europe. The view over Coptic Cairo from the roof terrace, however, made up for the mediocre multimedia downstairs.

One of my favourite exhibitions was found whilst walking around Zamalek one afternoon. I stumbled across the Safar Khan gallery where an exhibition by Marwa Adel mixed photography with Arabic calligraphy and other patterns & textures, creating canvases that tended towards graphic design. The work wasn’t incredibly innovative, but it was well executed, and the mix of aesthetic photographs & my current penchant for Arabic meant that I was rather enamoured by her work.

More Art in Cairo

Other places to check-out are Mashrabia Gallery, Culture Wheel, and of course, the usual places such as the Centre Culturel Français & the Goethe-Institut.

Always bring your camera.

Even if it’s just your point and shoot that you throw in your bag – always be prepared because you never know when you’ll come across a person, place, or thing that you will want to remember.

Don’t forget the people.

Often times when traveling, you focus so much on the landscape and tourist attractions, and not enough on the people who

live there. I think the people make the location – and it is always interesting to get portraits of different personalities.

Please be respectful of people’s emotions and cultures. It’s always best to ask them if you could take their picture before shoving a camera in their face and getting all up in their business.

Utilize your different shooting modes.

Take the time to adjust the camera modes for the specific shot you are taking. Especially if you are used to just keeping it on automatic all the time. When shooting a landscape, change it to landscape. For a portrait, change to portrait mode. You get the picture. It could make a big difference in the outcome of your photos, and all it takes is like 2 seconds.

Bring extra batteries.

It’s happened to all of us one time or another. Something great happens, you whip out your camera, the red battery light flashes, and the moment is gone. If you have a rechargable battery, make sure it is fully charged before you go out for the day…plus bring an extra. And if you use disposable batteries – bring lots and lots and lots with you.

Don’t be afraid to ask someone to take a picture.

Instead of being Mr./Mrs. Independent and wanting to do everything for yourself, kindly ask someone around you to take your picture so you can be in it as well. You don’t want every picture of yourself from your trip being at arms length, with half the arm showing in the picture b/c it’s holding the camera, up the nose shot – do you? Didn’t think so…and besides, it’s always fun talking to other people in new places.

Learn to use your self timer.

If there is nobody around, and you still insist on being Mr./Mrs. Independent, set your camera on a tripod, or even a table, pillar, or anything that is flat and sturdy, and bust out the self timer. Resist the in your face picture for hundredth time!

When the lights go out, turn off your flash.

One good way to ruin a potentially beautiful shot is when you use the flash at night when all the city lights/moon light is setting a perfect mood. You’ll probably have to use a longer shutter speed to do this, so be careful it doesn’t get blurry. But trust me, your results will be so much more satisfactory.

It’s also good to know how to turn your flash off for those times where there is a “No Flash Photography” rule.

Savor the flavor.

I like to take pictures of the the food I eat wherever I go. It seems that I can remember the taste better when I see the picture.

The food is all part of the traveling experience anyways.

Live in the moment and create your memories.

I find myself in a conflicting situation when I travel. Part of me wants to lose the camera and be 100% in the moment, and create a memory that I know is genuine. The other part of me knows that 5 years down the road, my memory will most likely fade from those moments, and it is the photographs that can bring me back to every last detail of those memories. Does anyone else feel this way?

My advice would be to find the balance. Don’t waste your time taking thousands of pictures that don’t – or won’t- mean anything to you. Enjoy yourself, and take pictures of those experiences that you do want to remember forever.
